We live in an era when game journalists can cynically nitpick faults, or forgive a favorite franchise for multiple sins. I see the temptation for both approaches. A game can be riddled with flaws but still somehow be fun, and a game can be perfectly polished yet a total bore. When you review, you need to think about your predilections and your preconceptions. I admit I am a gamer who loves strategy - I am happiest when I am being mentally challenged by my games, and I strive to be smarter and faster than everyone else. I put more value in beating someone in Starcraft than I ever did in my kill/death ratio. However, I can say that while Portal 2 may not be for absolutely everyone, it undeniably deserves a place among the greatest games of all time. Mass Effect, Half-Life, Oblivion, KOTOR, Starcraft, Okami, Diablo, Ico, Bioshock, Doom, Grand Theft Auto, The Legend of Zelda: the list is long, and it has a new member. I am honored to have reviewed Portal 2, and look forward to playing it again tomorrow.

The game delivers on everything that it has promised. An in depth storyline with catchy music definitely supports this title even without the co-op but when you add the co-op into the mix the game is worth every penny you spent. Valve has delivered a game that will give you hours of enjoyment as well as great satisfaction in solving each and every puzzle regardless of the difficulty. Portal fans will not be disappointed at all with this latest addition to the franchise. And new fans will be born. The bottom line is you cannot go wrong with Portal 2 when adding it to your gaming library. It's got a great story, great gameplay and co-op multiplayer.

    GamerliveTV - 9.5 / 10
The lack of replayability does not take away from the fact that Portal 2 is not just a great game, it is a contender for game of the year. A rich, satisfying and at times mesmerizing experience, you'll feel a sense of accomplishment as you defeat those painstakingly difficult puzzles and you'll laugh as GLaDOS tries to intimidate you from completing them. The story is captivating—and contains some of the best voice acting and writing in a video game to date. All of these elements makes Portal 2 beyond fun, some kind of different word that only the writers of the game could come up with, because whatever type of satisfyingly exciting experience this is, it is pure, unadulterated video game genius.

    IGN - 9.5 / 10
The original Portal benefitted from its brevity. It had a concise story paired with inventive first-person puzzle mechanics that challenged you to be creative while pulling the trigger. Portal 2 makes the original look like the prototype it was. It's filled with a larger cast of characters vividly brought to life through brilliant writing and some of the best voice acting in video games. Its puzzles are challenging without being unreasonable, and, once you're finished with the single-player mode, one of the best co-operative experiences on the market awaits. Valve cuts no corners and finds ways to make you care about everything from the major characters to the cubes used to solve puzzles. From the beginning of the single-player story to the end of the co-op mode, Portal 2 is a novel, unforgettable experience.

    PC Gamer - 94 / 100
It makes us both a little sad that, having played through once, we can never look at these puzzles—in either single-player or co-op—with those same bewildered eyes again (barring, as Aperture would call it, "a very minor case of serious brain damage"). The included developer commentary, and of course an encore performance from the cast, would be the only things that might make us start playing again after Jonathan Coulton's new song, "Glad You're Gone" (which is good, but "Still Alive" is a really tough act to follow) rolls with the credits. For that reason, our strongest words of caution are to choose your co-op partner carefully. You only really get one shot at these puzzles—don't waste them with someone who's already been through, as that would spoil the many surprises and the victory of discovering them for yourself. We'll definitely remember all of Portal 2 fondly, though, and as one of the best-written and finely polished gaming experiences in recent memory.

    GameFront - 90 / 100

Once I got through Portal 2, I loved it — but I had to learn to love it, and it took a while for me to really commit to it. The original Portal really was a video game that was so much more than just a game, reaching beyond the barriers of narrative or video game conventions to become something no one expected. Much of Portal 2 can't make the same boast: the game's opening levels feel too elementary and run-of-the-mill for it to achieve perfection. But it's pretty damn close.

    GameInformer - 9.50 / 10
The game's quality stays consistently outstanding throughout; there isn't a minute of filler content to be found anywhere in single-player or co-op. I would have loved to see something unique done with the story, which doesn't end anywhere interesting despite a reasonably satisfying ending. I would adore seeing Portal stretch its wings beyond being a series of puzzles that almost always have one correct solution waiting to be found. That said, the next game I want to play is a second run through of Portal 2, because the existing formula is excellent and brilliantly executed.

    OXM - 10 / 10
It seems unreasonable to penalise a game for being so good you want to keep playing it. While you won't spend as long on Portal 2 as CoD, its shorter, more concentrated high is irresistible.

    BrutalGamer - 9.5 / 10
Portal 2 is a fun and challenging game. The puzzles are often frustrating and difficult, but not so hard that you want to walk away from the game. This makes solving them extremely satisfying, and keeps you coming back for more abuse. The dialogue is amusing and interesting, and the storyline is just the right mix of old and new. Add in the fact that the cooperative mode is practically another game in itself, and Portal 2 is definitely worth buying. I give Portal a 9.5 out of 10, and of course recommend it to fans of Portal. I also highly recommend it to puzzle fans and anyone who loves a quirky story.
