Final Fantasy XIII-2: "Equally great level of graphical performance has been achieved on Xbox 360 and PS3" - says Motomu Toriyama
Videogameszone talked to Motomu Toriyama about Final Fantasy XIII-2. In Final Fantasy XIII-2 the graphic on PS3 and Xbox 360 achieved an "equally great level of graphical performance". Serah and Lightning are not the only charakters from Final Fantasy XIII that will appear in Final Fantasy XIII-2.
Videogameszone had a chance to talk to Final Fantasy XIII-2's Game Director Motomu Toriyama. We were interessted in how the graphics of the Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII-2 has improved compared to Final Fantasy XIII. Toriyama-san said that for Final Fantasy XIII-2 they developed more cutscenes using the ingame engine of Final Fantasy XIII-2. Concerning Final Fantasy XIII-2 it means that disc space has now less impact on graphic quality of Final Fantasy XIII-2. Here is the complete interview with Motomu Toriyama, Game Director of Final Fantasy XIII-2.
Videogameszone: Some of the latest Final Fantasy XIII-2 screenshots reveal Serah and Lightning as playable characters. Do players get the chance to see other Final Fantasy XIII characters in the new Final Fantasy XIII-2? Could you name some of them?
Motomu Toriyama: The story of FFXIII-2 revolves around Serah and the new male character, Noel, as the protagonists. They run into many characters during their adventures and each of the main characters from FFXIII will make their appearance in a surprising way. I understand that many fans are intrigued by the relationship between Serah and Noel so please wait for our next updates to find out more.
Videogameszone: The story is set some years after the final events of Final Fantasy XIII. The city New Bodhum is going to rebuild by survivors. Will the Sanctum also be part of Final Fantasy XIII-2? Will they possibly strike back? (Toriyama)
Motomu Toriyama: To be exact, the story starts 3 years after the end of FFXIII. New Bodhum is a settlement rebuilt in Gran Pulse by those who survived the destruction of Cocoon. The Sanctum has already been eliminated and new politics are carried out. However, the story is not politically-charged and the political situation is described only as a background of the in-game world.
Videogameszone: The ATB-System and the Paradigm Shift system will also be used in Final Fantasy XIII-2. We've heard something about the new anomaly system in Final Fantasy XIII-2. What is it about?
Motomu Toriyama: The speedy and highly strategic battle mechanics of FFXIII, such as the ATB for which the successive command entry and paradigm shift were introduced, have been received very well. Following the polularity, the system has been followed in FFXIII-2 and progressed in an authentic way. The game has improved particularly in two aspects: while the action element has been enriched with inclusion of cinematic action events, the strategic side has also been enhanced as you can now choose many types of monsters with various roles in the paradigm. With regard to elements of field exploration, whereas FFXIII did not offer many dungeons or map gimmicks, FFXIII-2 has new interesting additions such as dungeons with puzzle-solving features. There are many other mini-game features. Some of them have connections with FFXIII whilst others can be enjoyed as independent features when you fancy a short break from serious game play.
Videogameszone: The first half of Final Fantasy XIII was very straight forward with nearly no side quests. What can we expect in terms of side quests and is the world of Final Fantasy XIII-2 more open?
Motomu Toriyama: It is not that FFXIII-2 offers a huge open world to explore. However, as part of the new game design, a new system has been introduced to allow you to explore the world more freely and the story progresses in consequence. In FFXIII-2, various missions, or "quests" as you might call them, of different lenghts will be unlocked alongside the main story from the beginning of the game so that the player can freely choose and play them as they go along.
Videogameszone: According to an Xbox 360 system update Xbox 360 disc will offer much more disc space. Do we see Final Fantasy XIII-2 on Xbox 360 with the same amount of graphic details like on the PS3?
Motomu Toriyama: We had many movie scenes in FFXIII although due to tecnical sophistication we have experienced in the mean time many of them are replaced with cutscenes running on the in-game engine in the sequel. This means that disc memory gives less impact on graphic quality now and an equally great level of graphical performance has been achieved on both platforms.
